Persons of Interest / Timeline Discrepancies
Marcus Chen (Age 20):Arrived trailhead 0815 hours, approximately 15 minutes after remainder of group; states he overslept. Cellular phone battery depleted evening of October 14; device left at residence. Reeves confirms Chen present with her evening of October 14.
Sophie Reeves (Age 22):Reported subject missing October 16. States last contact with Walden was a text message evening of October 14. States Walden had mentioned discovering something related to investigation club research; unable to provide specifics. Carrier records show outgoing call from Reeves to James Whitmore at 0237 hours October 15, duration 18 minutes. Reeves did not disclose this call during initial interview. When asked in follow-up, stated she did not recall it.
Dev Patil (Age 21):Organized the hike. Selected trailhead location and route. Present at meeting point 0800 hours. States he encouraged Walden to walk to the trailhead rather than drive. Declined to elaborate on route selection when asked. Responses regarding planning of the hike were brief and did not expand under follow-up questioning.
Iris Wallace (Age 21):Present at trailhead 0800 hours. States she last saw Walden approximately one week prior. Volunteered during initial interview that she drove past Walden's residence on the evening of October 14; states she did not stop or make contact, and was driving to clear her head. No corroboration of this account. Review of Wallace's public social media accounts shows repeated photographs of Walden posted over preceding months. Wallace states these document the friend group generally.
James Whitmore (Age 22):Not present at hike. Initially stated he had no financial dealings with Walden. In second interview, acknowledged a $5,000 loan made to Walden in September 2020, characterized as assistance with college expenses. Denies any dispute regarding repayment. Cellular location data places Whitmore's device at his residence (Queen Anne, Seattle) continuously from the evening of October 14 through midday October 15. Consistent with ISP records for the same address.
Investigative Notes
Discrepancies between witness statements and carrier records indicate incomplete disclosure during initial interviews, specifically by Reeves and Whitmore. Nature of the relationship between Reeves, Whitmore, and Walden not established. Whitmore's location data is inconsistent with direct involvement.
Wallace's account of the evening of October 14 is uncorroborated. Patil selected the route and encouraged Walden to travel on foot; no evidence has been identified connecting either decision to Walden's disappearance.
No forensic evidence recovered. No witnesses to Walden's departure from his residence or to his movements toward the trailhead. Search of planned hiking area yielded no physical evidence. Classification as missing person with suspected foul play is appropriate given the circumstances. Evidentiary basis is insufficient to identify a suspect or support criminal charges.
Case Closure Rationale
Investigation suspended November 1, 2020 due to exhaustion of investigative leads and resource constraints. No new information received as of case file closure. Subject remains missing. Case classified as cold pending receipt of new evidence or information.
